ABOUT US

Started by accident,
kept going on purpose.

Profoodhomemade began in a home kitchen during lockdown, with John filming recipes almost as a distraction. A few years on, it's a proper family business — still run the same honest way.

ABOUT JOHN

From a Lifetime in the Kitchen to a Community Around the World

John is a self-taught chef who spent more than 30 years running a successful family catering business alongside his wife, son and a team of ten staff. Cooking has always been a huge part of his life, but in 2014 everything changed when he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease.

His health eventually forced him into early retirement and left him almost completely housebound. Suddenly finding himself with far more time at home, John needed something to keep himself busy and, as he puts it, stop himself from going stir crazy!

So, with a camera pointed at the hob, he began filming the recipes he had spent a lifetime cooking for his family and customers. There was no grand plan to build a YouTube channel or start another business.

He simply wanted to share the straightforward, traditional cooking methods he'd learned over many years in the kitchen.

But people kept watching.

John’s simple, no-nonsense approach struck a chord with home cooks who wanted recipes they could actually follow and food they genuinely wanted to eat. Before long, viewers were asking where they could buy the seasonings, oven gloves and other bits and pieces John used in his videos.

What began as a handful of home-cooking videos grew into a huge recipe library, a small online shop and eventually another family business.

In 2017, John underwent a major 16-hour operation. Thankfully, his health has improved considerably since then, but he certainly hasn’t slowed down. Now approaching 75, John still does much of the work himself developing and testing recipes, filming, editing, photography and writing his cookbooks.

What started as a way of keeping busy during one of the most difficult periods of his life has grown into a wonderful community of home cooks from around the world.

Through it all, John’s approach has remained the same: good, honest, homemade food, explained simply so anyone can have a go. Every recipe is cooked at home before it’s filmed, every product is something we use ourselves, and every order gets the same care whether it’s our first customer or our ten-thousandth.
